Vertex Systems Engineering (Vertex) has recently completed for Costain Ltd the provision of technical support for the Gatwick Station Development project.
Gatwick Station currently experiences significant passenger congestion both at platform level and in the existing station concourse. This is due to the growth in the use of the station and the number of passengers attempting to manoeuvre bulky luggage through vertical circulation facilities that are deemed unsuitable for such a situation.
The project aim is to provide additional station improvements that offer a much improved passenger experience by relieving crowding, improving vertical circulation and providing a more integrated concourse that offers an intuitive connection with the Airport terminals and/or onward travel. A criteria of the scheme is to ensure that the project does not adversely impact on the operational railway, or the airport whilst delivering the required benefits. Consideration was also required as to how the operational and passenger environment can be maintained (or even enhanced) during the construction phases of the project.
Deliverables required included and were in accordance with Network Rail GRIP 3 to 4 Project requirements;
Costain appointed Vertex to provide;
Duration for the work was March to September 2016 with the output of the works issued to Network Rail and its stakeholders for consideration to further develop the project.
